ADHD vs. Autism – What are the Differences?

ADHD and Autism are words that are far too common today. They seem like diagnosis’ that are talked about all the time and also go together quite frequently. Both are neurodevelopmental disorders that are seen in children. Often times both conditions will present as trouble paying attention, invading personal space, not reading social cues, and having meltdowns. Even though both autism and ADHD present with these symptoms they are different overall.

Here are some things that categorize as ADHD:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Trouble following directions
  • Hard time sitting still for extended periods of time
  • Constantly moving or fidgeting
  • Acts without thinking
  • Hard time waiting their turn or being patient
  • Takes physical risks

Here are some things that categorize Autism:

  • Avoids eye contact
  • Delayed speech
  • Prone to meltdowns
  • Trouble with safety and danger awareness
  • Gets upset with routine changes
  • Struggles with social cues
  • Has obsessive interests

These are just a few of the signs and symptoms; your child may show different signs and symptoms.

What can you do at your home to help a child who is struggling with these conditions? With both of these it is really important to have certain daily routines. This provides structure for them and expectations that will allow them to reset their emotions. When you know there is going to be a change in the routine because of a certain event make sure they are well aware of this far in advance….these changes can be very difficult for them. Another good thing to do is to allow some flexibility during homework time for movement breaks. This will help them focus better afterwards.

At The Specific Chiropractic Centers – Lake Country we work with kids who have ADHD as well as kids with Autism. We take this into consideration during their visits and cater to their specific needs. Our goal is always for them to leave with a properly functioning nervous system. What this does is allows the body and brain to work how it’s supposed to. Once this is achieved parents will notice a decrease in the signs and symptoms their child is experiencing. I really hope you liked this brief description of ADHD and Autism.
