What Causes Migraines in Children?

There are 38 million people who suffer from Migraines in the United States.

Often times when that statistic is given people immediately think of adults. What’s surprising is that around 10% of school-age children suffer from migraines as well.

A lot of people who suffer from migraines experience their first attack before the age of 12. Imagine when that first attack happens and there could be something done that soon to make sure people don’t have to live with these issues.

When kids experience migraines it has been shown that before puberty boys are more likely to suffer. Once adolescence approaches that changes as girls become more likely to suffer from a migraine.

Imagine when that first migraine attack happens and there could be something done that soon to make sure people don’t have to live with these issues.

What’s the cause though?

Research has been vague regarding the cause of migraines in kids but it is believed it is a combination of environmental and genetic factors. If one parent suffers from migraines kids have a 50% chance of having them as well with the percentage going
up to 75% if both parents suffer.

What we see at The Specific Chiropractic Centers is that a lot of kids that come in with chronic headaches and migraines have a nervous system issue going on. Once we see that and get the nervous system working how it’s supposed to we see a drastic decrease in the number of headaches or migraines experienced along with a  decrease in intensity.

This is really important as it will also decrease the anxiety the child may be experiencing due to having migraines. A lot of kids will develop anticipatory anxiety with the unknown that migraines bring. Also, kids who suffer from migraines have been shown to be absent from school twice as much as kids who don’t suffer. If you have a child who suffers from migraines don’t wait until they get worse or until they are old enough for medications.
